Study Purpose Heading link

The purpose of this study is to test the feasibility of implementing acupuncture intervention in a federally qualified health center and oncology clinic for breast cancer survivors. The long-term goal is to facilitate the widespread implementation, dissemination, and sustained utilization of acupuncture for symptom management among medically underserved breast cancer survivors receiving endocrine therapy in federally qualified health centers nationwide.

We are recruiting women who fit this criteria:

  • have histologically confirmed stage 0, I, II, or III breast cancer
  • are >18 years of age
  • have completed their primary cancer treatment (e.g., surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy) at least one month prior
  • are currently taking endocrine therapy (e.g. Tamoxifen, Letrozole, Anastrozole, Exemestane, etc.)
  • are able to read and speak English
  • have self-reported pain, fatigue, sleep disturbance, depression, hot flashes, and/or anxiety in the last month with an average severity rating of ≥3 (using 0–10 numeric rating scale) for at least 3 of the 6 symptoms, and experience at least 2 physical symptoms (pain, fatigue, sleep disturbance)

What Will Happen During the Study? Heading link

You will be randomly assigned (like flipping a coin) into a group that receives acupuncture
treatment or the usual care group.

Acupuncture group:

If you are randomized to the acupuncture group:
You will attend a total of 10 free acupuncture treatments, 2 treatments per week for 5 weeks.

During each acupuncture treatment, needles will be inserted on the body and will be left in for
30 minutes.

You will be asked to complete some surveys at week 0, week 6, and week 12.

Usual care group:

If you are randomized to the usual care group:
You will continue to receive your routine breast cancer survivorship care.
You will be asked to complete some surveys at week 0, week 6, and week 12.

How Much Compensation Can I Get? Heading link

If you complete the study, you will receive a total of $120.

If you are randomized to the acupuncture group, you will receive free acupuncture and compensation for parking and transportation.
